Tottenham Hotspur have told Premier League rival, Manchester United, that Eric Dier will cost them £50million.
According to the UK Telegraph, manager Jose Mourinho wants the England international signed in time for the 2017/2018 season.
Dier is believed to be on the list of targets that the former Chelsea boss has given to vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has so far landed Victor Lindelof from Benfica for £30.75 million.
Mourinho regards Dier as the long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, who United also bought from Spurs 11 years ago.
Dier, 23, can also play at centre-back, but it is in midfield that Mourinho sees him in the long term.
