The grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Reed says the grant will help responders in the Island prepare for a range of emergencies, from oil spills to chemical explosions, and help ensure they can protect the public from hazardous materials.

The grants are funded by fees paid by shippers and carriers of hazardous materials in commerce.
