Steven Gerrard criticise benfica over Manchester United win. Benfica hung goalkeeper Mile Svilar out to dry in the Champions League defeat at home to Manchester United, according to Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard criticise benfica over Manchester United win. United prevailed with a 1-0 victory, with the only goal of the game coming in the 64th minute when Svilar carried Marcus Rashford’s free-kick over his own goalline.
It was a major error by Svilar, but Gerrard felt that the Belgian youngster, who has yet to make a league appearance for Benfica, shouldn’t have played given his lack of experience.
Speaking on BT Sport, Gerrard said: “I don’t know what the manager’s doing. Picking [Svilar] is almost stitching him up. He’s clearly talented but no way near ready to play in the Champions League.”
Svilar, who joined Benfica from Anderlecht for £2 million in the summer, became the youngest goalkeeper to ever play in the Champions League aged 18 years and 52 days but his first game in the competition proved to be memorable for the wrong reasons.
Although he made five goalkeeping actions tonight, Svilar’s distribution was unconvincing as just 50 per cent of his balls out from the back found their intended recipient.
Benfica’s misery was compounded when they had defender Luisao sent off in the closing stages and Rui Vitoria’s team are bottom of Group A having failed to earn a single point so far.
